Middle School

During the middle school years, children experience the transition from childhood to adolescence. The MJDS Middle School is designed to challenge students academically while offering a nurturing, supportive environment that meets their changing emotional and physical needs. Our students gain self-confidence and form lasting friendships.

The MJDS faculty plays an important role in guiding our students as they prepare for the rigors of high school. Our staff observes each student’s progress and fosters independence in study habits and organization. Teachers lead hadracha (student advisee) groups where students meet weekly to discuss academic and social concerns.

General Studies

The Middle School curriculum provides students with a strong academic base that prepares them for high school. Students read thought-provoking literature, write research papers, study ancient civilizations and modern history, and acquire a firm foundation of scientific knowledge and methodology. Math shifts from our concept-based program to a traditional pre-algebra and algebra program.

Hebrew and Jewish Studies

During Middle School, students receive instruction in Biblical and Rabbinic texts. Students become well-grounded in the principles and values of derech eretz (polite and respectful behavior), tzedakah (justice /righteousness), and k’lal Yisrael (the unity of the Jewish people). With their teachers and each other,  students are encouraged to question and challenge as they learn about themselves and Judaism. From Biblical poetry to modern Hebrew literature, and from the history of Israel to the roots of the Milwaukee Jewish community, Middle School students gain a strong basis for their Jewish identity and for living a Jewish life.

Arts, Sports, and Student Government

Artistic expression through visual arts, drama and music is an integral part of the Middle School education. Omanut (art electives) offerings include saxophone, guitar, African drums, computer graphics, creative writing, quilting and cooking. MJDS offers all Middle School students the opportunity to participate in our athletic program and compete against their peers in the North Shore area. Students also have the opportunity to be involved with Student Council activities, help plan for our annual Michael Kovnar Memorial Mitzvah Day, Baki Muchin Maccabiah Day and volunteer for our community meal program. In addition, forensics, MATHCOUNTS, and Spanish are part of our Middle School activities.
