Music has always been an integral part of our children’s education and an important piece of their Jewish cultural traditions.
The MJDS Lower School music program is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn through the musical process. The broad goal is to develop cognitive, affective and sensory motor growth through which children can experience music as an integral part of their personal development. MJDS provides children with a wide variety of musical experiences and modes of learning which are based on the National Standards for Music Education. These include: singing, performance skills, reading and composing music, and developing appreciation for music and the arts.
At MJDS, we strive toward an integrated program of singing songs in English, Hebrew and the languages of other cultures. Singing is meant to enhance not only the music class, but general studies and Hebrew studies classes, as well. The learning and performance of a variety of songs gives added meaning to our school events, holiday programs and our own weekly “Shabbat Sing.”
In addition to the general music curriculum, there is hand drumming for the Kindergarten students, the 4th and 5th grade choir and recorder class, and a jazz band for the Middle School. Lessons in piano and violin are offered at MJDS by the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.
