6th Grade English

Sixth grade English incorporates a variety of subjects including grammar, writing, mechanics, vocabulary, and spelling.

Grammar:  Sixth grade students will master these eight parts of speech:  noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.  Students learn to define and identify each part of speech

Writing:  Students will focus on paragraph writing.  We will concentrate on the writing process, writing good topic sentences, writing paragraphs with supporting details, writing paragraphs supported with examples, writing paragraphs supported with incidents, cause/effect paragraphs, compare/contrast paragraphs, persuasive writing, letter writing, improving word usage, and improving sentences.

Students will also participate in informal journal writing.  The goals of journal writing are to acquire self-reflection and self-expression, to communicate experiences in words, to become more observant of self and others, to exercise imagination and innate talent, and to find wisdom within.

Mechanics:  Through Daily Oral Language students will learn the rules of capitalization and punctuation.

Vocabulary:  Sixth graders utilitze the lessons in the Sadlier-Oxford vocabulary book.  Students will define and use these words in context.  They will also learn synonyms, antonyms, roots, prefixes, suffixes, denotations, and connotations.  Students will also be required to learn to spell each of the unit vocabulary words.

Spelling:  Sixth grade students will not have a separate weekly spelling list, but they will be required to learn to spell the unit vocabulary words.
