Helpful Web sites

Do you need more information to help you succeed in class?  On this page, you will find sites among several categories for English class: Homework Helpers, Grammar, and Writing.  Some sites are a combination of resources.   For my literature classes, I have included sites that have recommended and award winning book lists.

 

ENGLISH CLASS GRAMMAR, STUDY SKILLS, AND WRITING RELATED SITES

 

Purdue University's New OWL

     This is the homepage for the University of Purdue's online writing lab, one of the first resources of its kind.  From here, you can find information about "The Writing Process," "General Academic Writing," and "Grammar & Mechanics."  "The MLA Style Guide for Research Papers" is also shown here.

University of Wisconsin

     This is UW's on-line writing lab. Under "Finishing Your Writing" in the section called "Stages of Writing," you'll find a great checklist of 12 common editing errors. Like any OWL (on-line writing lab), there are also lots of other areas to investigate.

B. J. Pinchbeck's Homework Helper

     This directory of over 700 homework-related links is arranged in caregories. It was created by a boy and his dad in 1996. B.J.'s site and many others can be found through DiscoverySchool.com. Look for "Homework Helpers" on the left hand side of the homepage.

Guide to Grammar and Writing Index

     This is an online grammar book that will help you learn about almost anything related to grammar or writing.  You can also access quizzes to see if you understand numerous topics.

Speaking of Language

     There's lots here also! Palindromes, idioms and phrases, misspelled words...lots of help understanding how to manipulate our wonderful language.

How to Study.com

     This site has lots of very useful information to help improve your study skills and test taking strategies.

Study Guides and Strategies

     This is a good site to learn about reading, studying, writing, preparing for tests, and participating in class.  The studying and test taking tips are especially helpful.

Fact Monster

     This site has lots of general information.

Judy Vorfield's Webgrammar

     This is another grammar review site.  She has lots of links.

Grammar Rock

     Here you can listen to and find the lyrics to the famous ABC television Sscholastic Rock cartoons.  They can help you learn grammar.

The Five Paragraph Essay

     In general, when you are asked to write an essay, this is the basic model you will be expected to use.  This site takes some of the mystery out of developing a longer essay model.

Paradigm Online Writing Assistant

     No matter what kind of essay or report you have to write, you will find the guide here.  The Writing Assistant will help you understand what you need to consider before you begin writing.

The National Book Awards

Within this site (under "Awards," drop down menu) you will find the last several years' winning titles.

Booklists for Children's Literature

This link will take you the Monroe (Indiana) Public Library's site that has plenty of other links to award winning books and lots of different genre.

International Reading Association

"This is a booklist with a twist: Children themselves evaluate the books, and provide reviews of their favorites. Since 1974, Children’s Choices have been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, librarians, parents—and children themselves."

This wikipedia site has a list of legends to which you can refer for ideas.

This Edgar Awards site lists winners of this mystery book award.

This is a pdf file of horror books for young adults.

Game ON! Young Adult Sports Novels is the name of this site.
