YAHADOOT (JEWISH STUDIES)
The Jewish Studies program in 5th grade is based on study of the Book of Exodus. Students continue to use and develop their skills as learners of Torah and become familiar with identifying literary devices that find expression in the Biblical narrative (e.g., theme words, echoes from earlier texts, repetition). We will carefully study the character of Moshe and explore his role as a leader of the Jewish people. We will ask many questions about what it means to be a good leader and use the text as a source for helping us to identify characteristics and models of leadership.
Students also will appreciate the Book of Exodus as the source for many religious practices in Jewish life. Therefore, we study the story of Pesach in depth, look closely at the experience of the revelation at Mt. Sinai and the giving of the Ten Commandments, and devote ourselves to understanding the meaning and purpose of Shabbat. We will build upon the students’ growing knowledge of Jewish prayer and the siddur, study and chart the cycle of the Jewish year, and even anticipate the approaching milestone of becoming Bat/Bar Mitzvah.
