HOW TO LIGHT THE CHANUKAH CANDLES
The Chanukah candles are placed in the chanukiah from right to left. On the first night, put one candle on the right side of your chanukiah, light the shamash, and say these blessings before lighting the Chanukah candle:
- Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam Asher Kidshanu B’Mitzvotav V’Tzivanu LeHadlik Ner Shel Chanukah
- Praised are You, Sovereign of the Universe, who has sanctified us through Your commandments and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light.
- Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, She’Asah Nisim La’Avoteinu BaYamim Hahem Bazman Hazeh
- Praised are You, Sovereign of the Universe, who made miracles for our ancestors in those days during this season.
- Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, She’hech’yanu, V’Kiy’manu, V’Higyanu Lazman Hazeh
- Praised are You, Sovereign of the Universe, who has given us life, and sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season. *The She’hech’yanu is said the first night only.
On the second night, put two candles on the right side, and light starting from the “new” candle on the left, reciting only the first two blessings. Keep increasing the candles each night until all eight candles are lit. Because we traditionally do no additional work once we have lit Shabbat candles, on Friday evening light the Chanukah candles first and then the Shabbat candles.
