SUGGESTIONS FOR FAMILY CELEBRATION
Many families decorate the house with greenery and flowers to recall the spring harvest in Israel and the tradition that Mt. Sinai burst into bloom as the Torah was given. Bikkurim, baskets of first fruits, may be decorated with flowers.
Families might enjoy participating in a Tikkun Leil Shavuot at a local synagogues, or they may wish to create a celebration just for their family. Other suggestions include:
- Retell the Ten Commandments
- Create an “11th Commandment”
- Create a list of “Our Family’s Ten Commandments
- Retell the story of Ruth – how about a puppet show?
- Play a game of Biblical charades, acting out Torah stories
- Read from the book Sedra Scenes, which contains a lighthearted dramatization of each Torah portion
- Play Torah Jeopardy
Any celebration would be incomplete without dairy treats, such as make-your-own sundaes, honey cookies in the shape of Hebrew letters, cheese and crackers, or mini-cheesecake.
