Understanding the Power of Social Media

MJDS will host “Understanding the Power of Social Media,” a workshop for upper school families on Wednesday, December 4 2019, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m.

Led by Barry Slagle and Linda Krieg of the Lotus Legal Clinic, parents and upper school students will hear information on how social media shapes a child’s internet experience. As social platforms become more utilized, the threat of human trafficking rises. Catfishing, like the TV show, may seem non-threatening, but it is often the first step for human traffickers to lure friendly teenagers into conversation, and eventually, meeting in real life.

The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally. 80% of them are trapped in forced labor and 1 in 4 victims are children. Taking steps to become aware of the risks is crucial.

This discussion is meant for both adults and upper school students to learn together. While the content of the program may not be suitable for lower school students, adults of lower school students are welcome to attend without their child if they would like.
