Kindergarten - Lower School Arts Program
Individual creativity is emphasized through a series of diverse projects that offer open-ended results. Unstructured time is given for students’ ideas to flourish. Students learn how artists and cultures in the past have used art to express themselves. We have a ceramic kiln and slab roller to create, fire and glaze pottery. In addition to studio work at the school, students take field trips to artists’ studios, and local art galleries and museums such as the Milwaukee Art Museum. Students in third through fifth grade take part in the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Junior Docent Program. This includes a graduation ceremony where students present on the artist and/or artwork of their choice for parents and friends.
Beautiful artwork is always displayed around the school throughout the year. Every other year, a large showing of the children’s artwork is displayed in the MJDS Art Show. It is a wonderful event and opportunity to present a sample of student’s work to the Milwaukee community.
